Whispering Acres Zoo Manager Position
To perform the role WA Zoo Manager successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
Understanding and actively participating in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established WA policies, procedures and training.
Consistent attendance is a must.
Ability to both give and follow oral and written directions effectively.
Ability to organize tasks and time to ensure timely completion of all projects.
Providing daily care to animals and their enclosures. Including, but not limited to cleaning, feeding, watering, securing, grooming and maintaining exhibits.
Tasks will include heavy manual and skilled work such as moving and manipulating heavy food items, hoses, bales of hay, equipment and crated animals.
Cleans and maintains animal exhibits including use of chemical agents and special tools which are used to ensure the health and safety of the animals. Daily spot clean and weekly deep clean, zoo must be ready for the public at all times.
Prepares and distributes animal diets as determined by WA owner.
Monitors health of animals on a daily basis by observing eating habits, general activity, behavior and appearance, interaction with others, etc. Reports abnormal behavior and problems to WA owner without delay.
Maintains clean and safe work environment. Clean and put away tools where they are housed. Work with other WA staff on oversite of WA facilities, including ground maintenance (mowing, watering, etc.).
Adheres to established animal handling and related safety guidelines.
Assists in delivery of educational programs informally through interaction with zoo guests. You may be asked to offer support informally through interaction with Equine Assisted Learning activities or any other horse program offered at WA.
May be assigned jobs that require coordination with other WA employees.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Meet scheduling availability requirements, which could include nights, weekends and holiday periods to meet business needs.
Manage the VIP volunteer program. Including, but not limited to scheduling volunteer hours, helping volunteers with paperwork, keeping track of hours and barn bucks for each volunteer. Keeping a list of projects and chores for the volunteers to do, work with other WA staff to achieve this list. Present ideas to WA director for the Volunteer Appreciation event in April. Coordinate Volunteer Appreciation event.
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of the Zoo Manager:
Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.
Ability to regularly perform a variety of physical tasks that include but are not limited to climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, crawling.
Physical strength, including ability to frequently move up to fifty (50) pounds.
Ability to work in small, confined spaces. While performing this job, the noise level may be loud.
Ability to work in all weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions; frequently exposed to wet, humid conditions, extreme hot and cold.
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may include rubber/latex gloves, steel-toed boots/shoes, face shields, eye goggles, etc.
No allergy related to plants or animals that may interfere with the ability to work.
No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch balance and ability of movement that might interfere with ability to work.
Ability to maintain immune response to exposure to infectious and parasitic diseases. While performing this job, coming in contact with non-human (potentially human) bodily fluids with occur daily. i.e., feces, vomit, blood, etc.
